Save button missing when editing page in Pages library of Enterprise Wiki site

I am setting up an Enterprise Wiki site. The default "Home" page was created in the Pages library, which is based on the "Basic Page" layout (enterprise wiki page content type).

When viewing the Home page, and i click "Edit this page", the fields become editable, however there is no Save button in the ribbon, and no check-in or check-out controls either. All i see is "Stop Editing", no option to save.

Why might the "Save" button not be visible? How can i get it back?

Note - I work for a large company with corporate branding enabled within the site, not sure if anything there would interfere with the ribbon controls..
