Status of the connection to SharePoint

I am developing an Excel tool (using VBA) that copies some files from SharePoint to the local drive.

The user of the Excel tool has the necessary access rights to the SharePoint but sometimes, the code is unable to make the copy of the file.

Is there a way to see the status of the "connection between the users PC and the SharePoint"?

What I found as solution is to (automatically) open the Internet Explorer on the SharePoint webpage, but this is not really user-friendly. And, in top of it, I would like to prevent user browsiing in the SharePoint website. I only want to make a copy of a specific file without user interaction.
