Sharepoint Designer 2010 workflow creating a list item in a discussion, subject line on reply is a reference number

I have a sharepoint designer 2010 workflow that is creating a list item in a discussion board. The workflow works as expected except for one piece; the subject. The subject line is created without issue but a reference number is shown at the end of the breadcrumb instead of the subject. For example- Physical Resources : Test 1:6_.000 :Flat

Test 1 is the list and 6_.000 should be the subject line but it's not. This is not an issue until someone replies to the discussion and an alert is sent with a subject line of Test 1: 6_.000 instead of Test 1: subject of the discussion.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
