Audience targeting using FBA roles in SharePoint 2013

I am using FBA and SQL Role Membership provider on a SharePoint 2013 site. The issue I am having is in regards to Audience targeting.

What I have done so far is create one SharePoint group per role, and add each role to these groups.

To my surprise, audience targeting doesn´t seem to work. I have added a Web Part and one of these groups as Audience. None of its members are able to see the Web Part. They are only able to when the users are added directly to the SharePoint groups.

Can FBA be used with audience targeting in SharePoint 2013 On Premises?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
