Office Documents opening twice



We have a strange issue occurring in our SharePoint 2010 environment. When a user clicks on a document, it seems to open the document twice. For example, if a user clicks on an excel document (.xlsx), Excel will open two client windows - each with the document opened in 'read only' mode.


After search, I found the following article that mentions modifying the docicon.xml file, but the entries i have in there for .xlsx files matches what the article says to implement:



<Mapping Key="xlsx" Value="icxlsx.png" EditText="Microsoft Excel" OpenControl="SharePoint.OpenDocuments" />


Every one of my servers has this same line in the docicon.xml file, but the documents are still opening twice. I also checked to ensure the OpenDocument class add-on was enabled in IE, and it is. We do have two copies of IE on our machines: 32bit and 64bit. I have heard this could be a cause as well. Any ideas?


We are running IE8 (I know!) on Win7.
