CSS Effects in IE and Browser Mode

In one of my pages I want to use some CSS rounded borders, so I have this:

-moz-border-radius: 10px;
-webkit-border-radius: 10px;
border-radius: 10px;
-khtml-border-radius: 10px;
/* it also scraps my box shadow */
box-shadow: 3px 3px 4px #000;

Which should work for any version of Internet Explorer newer than version 8.

However, it doesn't work because Sharepoint needs this (in the master page), which destroys the CSS:

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=8"/>

And I'm going the rounds with that issue, to no avail.

What can I do? If I change the compatibility mode in the master page, it breaks the styles. Can this be fixed without resorting to javascript?
