Urgent: Unable to update BCS external data in a Large List (5000+ items)

URGENT: Question regarding BCS and large lists (5000+ items)

I have a document library in SharePoint Online that has more than 5000 items. (I'm well aware of the limitations and steps to prepare for large lists and views and indexes).

One of the columns I have is an External Data Column pointing to an on-premise database. Everything works as expected, however, when I attempt to refresh the data (using the green circle button), i receive the following error (in red text):

"An error occurred. Administrators, see the server log for more information. "

The update works fine on libraries below the 5000 item limit.

When consulting the BCS ULS log in SPO, I am not getting any new error messages show up.

Does BCS updating just not work in large lists?!?!?
