Using AAM for external access to a subsite (http://ift.tt/1m2127C)

Platform: Server 2012 R2
Version: Sharepoint Foundation 2013

Hi,

We have the default IIS site setup with a default web application. There is a subsite under this. So to clarify:

http://server1

takes us to the default sharepoint page

http://server1/SubSite

takes us to an actual production site.

Now, when trying to provide external access to the website, we'll use the following URL:

http:://external-address/SubSite

which then redirects the URL with the following:

http://external-address/SubSite/_layouts/15/start.aspx#/SitePages/Home.aspx

Without the '_layouts/15/start.aspx#/' the site works fine. So I've gone into the AAM and added an internet URL of:

http://external-address

but after reading round because the site is stored in sharepoint we can't do any IIS bindings. I have already tried the MDS workaround as well (deactivating Minimal Download Services). Any ideas on a solution?
