Edit item ribbon is unaccessable when on an edit form

When I select to edit an item the entire ribbon for the edit tab becomes unavailable(save, cancel, delete, attach files etc). I have one console error which is as follows:

SCRIPT5007: Unable to set property 'control' of undefined or null reference File: ScriptResource.axd, Line: 5, Column: 74203

Any ideas as to why the ribbon is entirely out on the edit and new item only?
