In one instance of two large lists connected via SPD 2010 workflow I observe a strange behavior: Lookups in Build dynamic string and Set workflow variable sometimes work as expected and then almost consistently fail returning 0 for item ID.
For the same item we see, for instance:

Web service calls successfully return valid ID for a query matching by the same field.
Nothing particular in ULS, only 12-16-2014 10:34:46.28 w3wp.exe (0x22D8) 0x4540 SharePoint Foundation Workflow Infrastructure 88xr Unexpected WinWF Internal Error, terminating workflow, while in the UI the workflow shows a Workflow Completed message.
Has anyone encountered such an issue? Is it likely to be caused by excessive item count?
