Search items through search service or custom application

I have an application which is written in some language. Now, my customer developed some service using Java based webservices. The question is whether we need to crawl json based webservice and using search service application to bring the result into sharepoint like OOTB / develop an apps and through client side, connect webservice and bring result into custom page. Which is more efficient?
